This year's race is shaping up to be even more thrilling than last year's nail-biter, where the top spot was decided by a matter of minutes and a single sailfish catch. This time around, two boats, Star Fish and Claytime, are neck-and-neck with 7,075 points each, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown.
Star Fish, owned by Star Fish Marine LLC and skippered by Randy Estes, has been on a hot streak, releasing six blue marlin and 17 sailfish this season. Claytime, owned by Jon Clay and captained by Phillip Fender, is close behind with five blue marlin, one white marlin, and 19 sailfish under its belt. The competition is fierce, with only a few points separating the top boats.
The top 10 boats in the series are a mix of seasoned competitors and newcomers, with Rascal, Game On, and Bull Pen also in the running. The race is not just about the boats; the lady angler and youth angler standings are also hotly contested, with Cynthia Starosta aboard Star Fish leading the way, and Ford Schlicksup, Julia Gressette, and Reef Simmons vying for the youth title.
The tournament's meatfish categories, including dolphin, wahoo, and tuna, are also attracting attention, with Joe Kehoe's Legal Holiday leading the dolphin category and Stratton Pollitzer's On The Hook dominating the wahoo category. The new rules, aimed at rebuilding the state's red drum population, have introduced a catch-and-size limit of one red drum per person per day and a boat limit of two red drum per day. The slot limit has also been adjusted to 18-25 inches, and anglers must use non-offset/non-stainless circle hooks when fishing for gamefish with large hooks.
